I’ve recently join an online makeup training program called the University of Makeup. The University of Makeup is basically a set of beginner and advanced makeup training videos and manuals. You can study the material from your own home. I would like to use this article to give you my feedback and if I think you should give it a try.

Firstly I must say that there are tons of training videos on the site. You receive a handbook which includes all the notes of every video tutorial. It’s best to start from the beginning and work your way through till the end. There are short and very long videos. Some might be too long but even then it is difficult not to start the next lesson.

As a makeup artist I do plenty of weddings. Almost every client is a bit different and to know which colors go well with different skin tones is sometimes difficult. The various celebrity and bridal looks in the course has helped in this aspect. It gave me new ideas and I sometimes show my new clients the 14 makeup looks which is included in the course and then they choose the one they like.

I’ve made a list of pros and cons regarding the University of Makeup.

Cons:

1. More than 11GB of video to download. This may be too much for someone with a limited or slow internet connection. (Since writing this post they’ve included a DVD set. You can now get all the training videos on DVD)
2. You get your bonus ebooks systematically via email every 3 or 4 days. You have to ask them to send all of the ebooks at once.
3. If you want to join the makeup course and receive your makeup kit then you have to pay for everything. In other words they don’t have an installment plan when you take the makeup kit. I guess they can’t take the risk of sending a $500 kit to you and not get paid for it immediately.

Pros:

1. In my opinion there is more than enough training material to become a successful makeup artist. Over 22 hours of video training. That is 67 makeup lessons.
2. Once you join you are a member for life. You have access to future training videos and bonuses even if you’ve joined 2 years ago.
3. 7 professional bonus beauty ebooks which I really enjoyed.
4. Discount from their makeup store and free shipping.
5. Access to professional makeup advice from their team of makeup artists.
6. A very affordable way to become a professional makeup artist or simply learn how to apply makeup correctly on yourself.
